MONROE PUBLIC SCHOOLS DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC EDUCATION

General music education is a required subject Kindergarten through sixth grade. At the elementary level, grades K-6, music is scheduled for one 50 minute period every 4 days.

 

THE ELECTIVE MUSIC CURRICULUM
Grades 5 – 12

Beginning in the fifth grade, the Elective Music Curriculum of the Monroe Public Schools provides interested students with continued vocal and instrumental study and performance opportunities according to the requirements of their individual abilities and needs. In addition to taking the required General Music courses of the fifth and sixth grades, students may elect performance courses in Choir and/or Instrumental music.

 

Elementary School Music
Elective courses offered in the elementary schools are as follows:

Instrumental --- Strings, Wind, and Percussion – 5th grade
Vocal --- Select Choir – 5th and 6th grade

 

Middle School Music
Electives available in grades 7 and 8 are as follows:

Orchestra
7th grade Band
8th grade Band
Jazz Band (after school hours)
7th grade Mixed Choir
8th grade Mixed Choir
Jubilation (8th grade select mixed choir, meets after school hours)

 

High School Music
At the High School, all music courses are elective. The following courses are offered:

Music Theory I
Music Theory II
Piano I
Piano II
Music History/Appreciation

 

Instrumental
Concert Band (9-12)
Wind Ensemble (10-12)
Jazz Band
Orchestra

 

Vocal
Women’s Chorus (9-12 non-auditioned)
M.H.S. Expressions (10-12 women select)
Generations of Sound (11-12 mixed select)
Concert Choir (9-12 mixed select)
