Student Enrollment

When a family with school age children moves into the Monroe Public Schools district, it is important to notify officials as soon as possible. This will assist school personnel in determining the proper placement of the student in a school program. Arrangements for enrolling students in kindergarten through grade six should begin with a phone call to the building principal of the school in which the child is to be enrolled. Arrangements for enrolling students in grade seven and eight should begin with a phone call to the assistant principal’s office at Monroe Middle School. Grades nine through twelve should begin with a phone call to the Monroe High School counseling office or the principal. If parents are uncertain as to which school their child will attend, they can inquire at the Administration Building, Pupil Personnel Office, 1275 N. Macomb Street, telephone number 734-265-3110. Parents are also encouraged to bring copies of their child's last report card from his/her former school. They must bring the certified birth certificate, in compliance with Public Act 84 of 1987, and immunization records-Public Acts 368. They are required to sign a record release form at the time of registration and the receiving school will request records from the previous school.

Home School Cooperation

The academic progress of children is best supported by the cooperative efforts of the home and school. Students at school are assured opportunities through policies and programs adopted by your Board of Education. Each child has his/her own daily schedule of learning activities. As these differ from grade to grade, it is best to contact your school principal or teacher as to your child's academic schedule.

The following guidelines are for student and parent use so that learning experiences can be enhanced in out-of-school hours. These guidelines are stated generally, so allowances should be made for the grade and age of the child. If you wish help in doing this, please contact your child's principal or teacher.

For the student:

  1. Bring a book or assignment home from school every day.
  2. Wait to watch television until after your homework is completed.
  3. Devote no less than one-half hour to homework and independent reading each school day.
  4. Check your homework for accuracy and neatness.

For the parent:

  1. Diet, exercise, and adequate sleep habits help the student be at his/her best as a learner.
  2. Become personally acquainted with your child’s teacher as early as possible in the school year.
  3. Support your child by praising him/her not only for successes, but for efforts.
  4. Listen and encourage your child to discuss school activities with you.
  5. Show your support by attending as many school activities as possible including PTO/PTA meetings, student performances, and especially parent/teacher conferences.

Grade Reporting and Conferences

At the end of each trimester, parents of elementary and high school students will be provided with a report describing the progress of their child in the courses in which he/she is enrolled. At the middle school level, these reports are issued every 9 weeks. Generally, grade reports will be given to the student for delivery to the home. Parent/teacher conferences are held in November and February. Parents are encouraged to participate to receive reports from their children’s teachers.

Parents are also encouraged to contact the school to arrange for a conference with any staff member when they feel such a visitation is in order.

Student Achievement

A number of measurement instruments exist to assist schools in assessing student progress and achievement.  Those used for broad comparisons are called standardized tests and these have built-in comparison norms in the scoring systems.  No one measure is a true reflection of the full potential of a student's learning and achievement.  Rather, standardized test results should be used as a component of overall student evaluation which also includes report card grades, teacher conferences, diagnostic assessments, grade-level tests by subject, portfolios, learning logs, etc.
