The following post was written by Delaney Setzler and Lisabeth Farris, a Special Olympics Unified pair from Special Olympics Michigan. In July of 2018, Delaney and Lisabeth attended the 2018 Special Olympics USA Games in Seattle, Washington to participate in the Youth Leadership Experience (YLE). Along with Unified pairs from across the country, Delaney and Lisabeth were chosen for the YLE because of their leadership skills and passion for inclusion. Congrats on being named the #SOYouthOfTheWeek!
In July of 2018, we had the opportunity to attend the Youth Leadership Experience and represent Special Olympics Michigan at the 2019 Special Olympics USA Games in Seattle, Washington. The Youth Leadership Experience was an amazing program where we got to volunteer at the Games and learn how to expand Unified programming throughout our community. We volunteered at the Young Athletes festival, shadowed photographers for the Games, attended events, and interviewed Games spectators.
We took the information and ideas we gathered throughout the Games and applied them to our school. Since the Games, we have joined Special Olympics Michigan’s Youth Activation Committee and have taken steps to bringing more Unified activities to our school. We have organized three new Unified sports at our school to add to the Unified program, including Unified bowling, track, and bocce. The Youth Leadership Experience was very educational and inspiring to students in Unified Champion Schools, teaching us how to not only expand the program in our schools, but how we can educate our community on inclusion as well.
'Tis the season! Monroe High School is partnering with The Salvation Army to provide a special Christmas to families in need in the Monroe area. Students and MHS staff can help bring cheer to a selected family by donating gifts according to their TFT Classroom Wing! Details are below! ❤️ #wearemonroe
MPS Family,
I'm happy to report that the MHS Trojan Marching Band received a "Straight Ones" division rating at MSBOA Marching Band Festival this past Monday. This means that all three judges gave us no lower than an A- rating in any given adjudication category. Our students impressed some tough critics and left it all on the field at Flat Rock HS, giving the best performance I have seen yet. They continue to impress me daily with their social, emotional, and musical growth. Thank you to everyone at MPS who has taught, mentored, transported, and cleaned up after these kids, K-12, as they learn and grow. Your investment is their success: without it, this accomplishment would not be possible!
Our band and football team also received some positive press from local columnist Tom Treece in the Monroe News last week I have attached pictures of both MSBOA and from the news article (http://www.monroenews.com/news/20181009/tom-treece-monroe-high-school-trojan-game-refreshing). Keep up with students in the Monroe Band Program, and see our performance schedule with the link to our band website, found in my signature, and by following the Monroe Instrumental Music Boosters on Facebook!
Respectfully,
Joey Swinkey

Monroe High School Choir Camp - August 24, 2018
During the week of August 20th, the Monroe High School Choirs held their 3rd annual Choir Camp! Throughout the week, clinicians
Brett Yzquierdo from Tecumseh High School, Elise Dinwoody from Monroe Middle School, and Dr. Joseph Daniel from Madonna
University, joined with Monroe High School director Cate Windelborn and choir alumnus Zach Everly, to work with the students on their
piece for the back-to-school teacher in-service day. These clinicians also came with team building activities to share with us!
Students who attended the camp are very excited to perform for the faculty and cannot wait to get to know each other better
during the school year!
Helpful Tips for Registration Days!
- There is not an alphabetical breakdown for when grade levels report. If you are unable to make the times your class is scheduled, please feel free to come at a different time or day.
- The busing schedule for registration days is now posted below. If you do not have access to our website, please call transportation at 265-3300.
- The information in your welcome letter asks you to bring in the Free/Reduced Lunch application to registration days. We learned , after the letters were printed, we would be able to offer a free breakfast and lunch to all students. Sorry for any confusion. What we do need from every household is a Household Information Survey. We received the forms in time to include it in the 9th grade packets but not the 10th, 11th and 12th grade packets. These forms are available at the registration check in table for those that did not receive one in their packet. Students who turn them in during registration days or at the Fall Kick Off will receive a Trojan Pride ticket for the drawings. We are thrilled that every student is now included in our breakfast and lunch program.
**Fall Kick-Off/Open House Drawings will be done at 7:30 PM. Teachers will be available from 5:00-7:00 PM only.
